Session 3: Dusable Museum

On March 11, 2009, we visited the Dusable Museum in Hyde Park, where we were welcomed by Dr. Davenport and the rest of the museum staff.

Our goal while at the museum was to compare it to the Art Institute. To facilitate comparison, we asked the following questions...

1. What type of museum is the Dusable?
2. What types of objects are contained in the Dusable?
3. How is the activity of looking at artifacts at the Dusable different from doing so at AIC?
4. Compare how artifacts are presented and arranged at both museums. How is that similar/different?

  1. The AIC has at and installations from all over the world. The Dusable Museum has paintings and installations from African origin. Most paints and artworks have a deep African influence.

Some types of artifacts that were in the Dusable Museum were from the Civil Rights Movement. Some other finds were from Presidents Barrack Obama’s campaign.

In the AIC, you have designated areas that have specific artworks that coincide with a certain genres of art. The Dusable Museum has artworks arranged everywhere that don’t stick to one title.

In the Dusable Museum, artifacts are arranged evenly, and aren’t heavily categorized. The AIC categorizes paints and pieces of art.

  2. There were a couple of artifacts that I found interesting at the DuSable Museum. I liked how Harold Washington’s campaign buttons were all placed as if they were being poured out of a box. I loved an untitled art piece by Alexander Miller. This painting was extremely colorful, but there was still a part of this painting that stood out. It was a tree reflected on water. I think that this painting reflected some things in the African culture, like masks. Another piece I liked was a Yombe people powerful figure. It was a two headed dog made out of wood, with nails in it. On top of it was a mirror. They also had a sing on a piece of wooden board that was about the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party for a community breakfast. I’m glad they have this because it shows a very important step people took to fight for what they believed in.

  4. This two institutions are similar because they both are great museums to visit, They both have great artwork and a lot of the same artist, they have maybe some of the same artwork.

African artifacts are in the museum of Dusable or also African American artifacts.

It’s different because the AIC is bigger and everywhere you look there’s an artifact with different topics.
In the Dusable it’s smaller because and the space is almost all together.

The artifacts are arranged in their own rooms and they’re all about the same subject, That’s why I think they’re the same. They’re different because one museum is smaller and the other bigger.

The two institutions are similar because they both had unique painting the difrences between the two institutions is that the dusable museum had paintings aboute African American art and the art is based more in history.

the types of artifacts contained in the museum are mostly artifacts that where used in history

Its different because the dusable museum has more history behind its art and the AIC I found the art more intereting

the art in the AIC are more organized and categorized and =
