Session 1: Art Institute of Chicago

On February 4, 2009 we took our first field trip to the Art Institute to examine the questions:

What is art? What is the purpose of art? How do we look at art in a given space- like the Art Institure of Chicago?

  1. In the painting, "Zapata," by Jose Clemente Orozco, the medium was a canvas made out of cloth. The form in the way Orozco placed Zapata was in the middle, catching the viewers attention. He is depicted with power and intimidation. He is the first person in the painting that will catch your attention.

  2. The first time I went to the art institute
museum, I choose the Night Life. because of
the question that i had it was What piece of art
    describes you the most?
I choose this picture because I think it really
describes me the way I am. The way I am is that I like
to party a lot. What the picture had was some people dancing
I like to dance and go out and have a lot of fun.
what I saw that those people where doing is having
fun and dancing or maybe they were just celebrating
Thats why i think they name this piece
    The night life

  3. I choose the painting, "Hercules and the Lernaean Hydra" by Gustave Moreau. I liked the way that the serpents look big, fierce, and evil. Also that Hercules seems as if he will be defeated because there's people already lying on the ground in front of the serpent. I love how the shading is showing the sun and the serpent is in the dark. The artist used oil on canvas. This painting can be distinguished because Hercules is not so muscular compared to other paintings.

  4. The title of my artwork is "Night Hawk" by Edward Hoppper. The form and the colors he uses are yellow, green, white, brown, gray, and black these are the colors he uses in hte paintig. The subject matter is it's in a resturant and there are three people in the resturant and it looks like they are just hanging out and its like midnight.I choose this painting because to me it reminds me of relaxation or just hanging out with my friends out late and just kicking it.Writin by:Omar Gutierrez

  5. In this painting Grey Diamond by Ilya Bototowsy there is lots of colors like blue, red, grey, yellow, black, and green. There are shapes that fit into on big diamond. There rectangles, triangles, and squars. the meaning of this painting is to suck you into it and enjoy all the colors and shapes it has to offer. when you look at it you feel like a kid again.

  7. I choose the painting “The Weaver”, by Diego Rivera in 1936 because it shows a woman that looks like she makes her own clothing. It looks like she’s a really hard worker and it looks like she’s tired because her eyes are like close. It reminded me of other women who would make their own clothing and then sell it. When I saw this painting I saw some shapes too. I saw a rectangle on the furniture and on that same furniture there were some other rectangles too. By, Jackie Patino

I chose the painting the “indestructibles” because it looks interesting .it might look like a simple painting but I think it means something more than what it looks. in the picture you can see 4 man in jail and in shackles and they seemed to look depressed and one of them is looking outside a window and it looks like a nice and peace full and its the only part of the painting that uses warm colors. I wonder why philip evergood decide to make this painting look so depressing. I think its because there’s a hidden message in the painting.
